This 11-day journey explores Celtic culture, spirituality, and the Episcopal history of Scotland. Pilgrims will also connect with the contemporary Iona community on Iona. Highlights include Edinburgh and Glasgow, the Isle of Iona with its evocative abbey, Kilmartin Glen, the location of hundreds of ancient stone markers and structures. Pilgrims will also spend a day on Lindisfarne, the Holy Island, learning about Saints Cuthbert, Aiden, and Hilda. This itinerary offers a glance at what you can expect on your pilgrimage. We arrive in Amsterdam at 9:00am and depart for Edinburgh on KLM 927 at 11:55am, arriving in Edinburgh at 12:25pm. From Edinburgh, we leave directly for Glasgow. We’ll enjoy a catered lunch (included) and we’ll visit Govan Church, home of the Govan Stones – carved stones, crosses, and sarcophagi dating to the Viking period in Scotland. We’ll check into our hotel in the mid afternoon, giving you some free time before our opening dinner (included). Overnight at Radisson Blu, Glasgow.
We’ll get a slightly later start today, giving you a chance to rest after your travel and first day in Scotland. We’ll start in the mid morning with a walking tour around Glasgow, including St. Mungo’s (Glasgow Cathedral), George Square, and other sites of interest. We’ll finish our tour near George Square, with many wonderful lunch options (on your own). You’ll have the balance of the day to explore Glasgow on your own, including dinner. Overnight at Radisson Blu, Glasgow.
Today is a full travel day. We depart early for Oban, the gateway to the Hebrides. We’ll travel through Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, arriving in Oban in time for you to enjoy lunch at any of the cafes or restaurants in town. In one or two groups, we’ll visit the Oban Distillery (optional), before departing Oban by ferry. We arrive on the Isle of Mull, travel across Mull, and arrive in Fionnphort for our final ferry of the day. We arrive on Iona in time to unpack and settle in before our dinner (included). Overnight at St. Columba Hotel.
We start our day with worship at the Iona Abbey. Following worship, we’ll enjoy a guided tour of the Abbey, Nunnery, and village. After lunch (included), our guide will lead a nature walk towards the south end of the island, discussing the natural history, geography, and geology of the island and the region. Dinner (included) and overnight at St. Columba Hotel.
On our final day on Iona, we’ll start the morning with worship at the Abbey, followed by time in retreat and spending time in both group and individual reflection. The afternoon is free and you can explore the island, play a round of golf, or fill your time as you desire. Dinner (included) and overnight at St. Columba Hotel.
Today we will visit one of the oldest remnants of human activity on the British Isles: Kilmartin Glen with over 350 monuments, standing stones, stone circles, cairns, and an ancient fort. We’ll start at the museum for orientation. We’ll have lunch together (included). Then a local guide will provide interpretation while your spiritual guide will provide moments for reflection and meditation. We continue on to Edinburgh, arriving in time for dinner (included). Overnight at Radisson Blu Hotel, Edinburgh.
We depart Edinburgh early for Lindisfarne, the Holy Island. Exact departure to be determined based on tide schedule. We’ll tour the Parish Church of St. Mary, including time to visit with the vicar, followed by a guided tour around the Priory. You’ll be on your own for lunch and free time in the afternoon to explore the village or castle. Departure is dependent on the tide schedule. We’ll return to Edinburgh in time for dinner (on your own). Overnight at Radisson Blu Hotel, Edinburgh.
We begin with a walking tour of the Royal Mile, including St. Giles Church and Old St. Paul’s Church. After our time on the Royal Mile, we’ll walk to the Grassmarket for lunch at the Grassmarket Cafe. The Cafe is one of the social enterprises founded by the Greyfriars Presbyterian Church. After lunch, we’ll visit Greyfriars and learn more about the history of the kirk, the Reformation in Scotland, including the split between the Presbyterian and Anglican churches. Dinner (on your own) and overnight at Radisson Blu Hotel, Edinburgh.
We’ll wrap up our group touring today with a visit to Edinburgh Castle in the morning. While portions of this visit will include a guide, you will be free to explore the castle at your leisure. After providing an introduction to the Castle, our guide will depart, leaving you free to explore on your own. You have the balance of the day free to explore Edinburgh, including the Museum of Scotland, the National Galleries, and Holyroodhouse Palace. You can relax at any of Edinburgh’s lovely pubs, or board a hop-on, hop-off bus to explore the entire city. If you’d like to experience high tea, today’s the day! We’ll re-gather in the early evening to worship, reflect, and break bread together at our closing dinner. Dinner is included, overnight at Radisson Blu Hotel, Edinburgh.
