The group will travel together from Denver to Edinburgh on an overnight flight.
2h 24m
7h 50m
From the Edinburgh airport, we drive west to Kilmartin Glen, one of the richest concentrations of prehistoric monuments in Scotland: standing stones, stone circles, cairns, and an ancient fort spanning over 350 sites. We'll visit the museum for orientation then walk out into the glen to the standing stones and stone cirlce. We gather for opening worship at Kilmartin parish church in the afternoon before continuing on to Oban.

Included
You have the chance to sleep in a bit today, explore Oban on your own, or visit the Oban Distillery for a tour (optional, separate fee). We depart on the 12:15 ferry to Craignure. Enjoy an early lunch before boarding or dine onboard (on your own). From Craignure, we take a private coach across Mull before the final short ferry from Fionnphort to Iona. We gather for a program with Hal and Jane Anne before dinner.
Included
We begin the day with worship at Iona Abbey at 10:30am. Following worship, we'll gather for lunch (included) before beginning the Iona Pilgrimage Walk. The walk is the island's traditional circuit of its holy places. In the evening we gather again for a time of reflection.
Included before the pilgrimage walk.
Included
We visit the Abbey Museum and Reilig Odhrain, the island's ancient burial ground, said to hold the graves of early Scottish kings, and our group program finishes by late morning. You are on your own for the balance of the day. Boats run to Staffa for Fingal's Cave in the early afternoon, and travelers who want to go book their own seats.
Included.
We retrace our route off the island: a ferry from Iona to Fionnphort, then by coach across the Isle of Mull. From Mull, we take the ferry from Craignure to Oban and stop at Glencoe to stretch our legs, where there is a cafe. Lunch (on your own). We continue on to St Andrews, our home for the next three days. We have time to unpack before dinner.
Included.
This morning we walk St Andrews with Dr. Ian Bradley, whose work on Celtic Christianity shapes much of this pilgrimage's theme. Enjoy lunch and a free afternoon to explore the town on your own.
Included.
We spend the day at the ruins of St Andrews Cathedral, once the largest church in Scotland and the seat of its medieval archbishops, and at St Andrews Castle, overlooking the North Sea. Lunch today is on your own.
Included.
We leave St Andrews early and travel down the coast to Pittenweem in the East Neuk of Fife, where we hold communion in St Fillan's Cave, a small tidal cave associated with the sixth-century saint. After lunch (on your own) We continue south and cross into England, reaching the causeway to Lindisfarne. From here we come onto Holy Island as pilgrims have for centuries: those who wish walk the Pilgrims' Way across the sands. Those who prefer can ride over the causeway by coach. In the evening we gather for a program.
Included
We have the whole day to explore Holy Island: the ruins of Lindisfarne Priory, the parish church of St Mary the Virgin, and the small museum. There is time in the afternoon to walk out to St Cuthbert's Isle or along the shore. Lunch today is on your own.
Included
We depart Lindisfarne early, crossing to the mainland toward Edinburgh. We stop at the hotel to drop our luggage before arriving at St Giles' Cathedral in time for worship. Following worship, you have free time for lunch (on your own) before regathering at the entrance to Edinburgh Castle. The balance of the afternoon is free. Dinner is on your own.
We transfer to South Queensferry and take the boat out to Inchcolm Island in the Firth of Forth to visit Inchcolm Abbey, an Augustinian house founded in the twelfth century and among the best-preserved medieval monastic buildings in Scotland. We are back in Edinburgh in the late afternoon for closing worship and communion at a parish church near our hotel before a celebratory farewell dinner.
Included
After breakfast we transfer to the airport for our flight to Chicago and on to Denver.
